Other Towing Considerations
Assuming you have done all inspections for your trailer and cargo, there are a few more tips for being on the road and towing your trailer safely.
Towing Tips:
- Always drive at moderate speeds when towing. Driving at moderate speeds can avoid trailer sway
- While driving, it is essential you stay alert for potential problems ahead
- Lane changes and braking should be planned to allow for space and timing
- Avoid heavy braking as it can cause problems such as sliding or jack knifing
- Try to anticipate having to stop for lights or traffic and begin slowing ahead of time. Remember, your braking time and distance are going to increase with a heavy load behind you
- Try to avoid sudden steering maneuvers that could put you out of control when towing a load.
- Reduce speed when traveling on gravel, unsealed or worn roads.
- When making a turn towing a trailer, always ensure you compensate for a much wider turn.
